Postcards from World War One - France
70My great grandfather, Reginald Trevor, an Australian soldier in World War One, sent these postcards home to his mother while overseas. They depict scenes from France, including the Somme.

Many postcards produced during the First World War were used for propaganda, and showed rousing images of the Allied troops defeating the enemy, (click here for a multimedia display of these from a First World War website on the topic). However the postcards featured below are scenic shots, much like the photographs my great grandfather enjoyed taking during his time serving. Unfortunately many of his photographs were lost and to make up for this, he sent these postcards home to his family.

I notice that today the last surviving American veteran is said to have died at the age of 110. My Mom (103) said, "Well he's ahead of me!" WWI plays an interesting part of the Masterpiece "Downton Abbey" currently running on many PBS stations. Are there still surviving veterans from Australia, France, Germany, England, etc., could be a Hub topic for you, if you are able to find out. I once suggested changing Memorial Day to Election Day so all Americans might better be able to vote and truly memorialize what the day we vote has cost so many families. (By the way, my senator didn't even reply, and at that time we could have canvased some WWI survivors for their approval!)
Just had a look at where Gamaches and it is on the Somme towards the coast. not far from where my graddad used to go for his 'R and R' at Le Treport. I visted LeTreport sevral years ago, but when I was on the Somme last year I went to Theipval and Lochnaghar. On another tack.....I have some DVD's aboutthe Somme if yu want copies ?

@advanced biker: These postcars were blank on the side for writing on. Many of his photographs were lost when he was in hospital so he bought these and sent them to his sister Mary instead.

Very interesting as all my grand fathers postcards were censored. All yours seem to have a name on them....

@Perspycacious: Thanks for your comment - That is amazing that he lived until 110! There are no surviving WW1 Veterans left in Australia unfortunately. It would be a great hub however to find out all surviving WW1 veterans.
